DIVE INTO WEEKI WACHEE: YOUR GUIDE TO LEARNING FREEDIVING WITH SAVAGE DIVING

Learn To Freedive In Weeki Wachee, Florida

Weeki Wachee’s crystal‑clear springs and easy access to the Gulf of Mexico make it one of Florida’s best places to learn freediving and spearfishing. At SAVAGE DIVING, our instructor Ryan Rush has decades of experience teaching beginners through instructor‑level courses and have earned a reputation for producing confident, safety‑conscious Divers and Spearos. Our signature “Crawl, Walk, Run!” approach guides students from online lessons, classroom/pool sessions to spring training and ultimately to offshore Dives & Spearfishing. You’ll build confidence in a controlled environment before taking on the ocean.

Why Weeki Wachee Is Ideal

Weeki Wachee and the surrounding springs provide calm, controlled conditions so you can focus on technique without waves or currents. Popular sites include:

  • Hospital Hole: A 150‑ft‑wide spring on the Weeki Wachee River with depths around 110 ft and ledges at various levels for progressive training.
  • Buford Springs: An 80‑ft cavern—perfect for honing equalization and rescue skills.
  • Hudson Grotto: A sinkhole near Weeki Wachee with platforms at 25 ft, 60 ft and 100 ft and maximum depths near 145 ft., ideal for depth training!

These pristine freshwater locations allow you to practice breath‑holds, finning techniques, safety drills & more in calm water before training offshore.

Our “Crawl, Walk, Run!” Method

We break your freediving journey into three progressive phases:

  1. Crawl – eLearning & Classroom/Pool: Start with PADI eLearning modules and Classroom/Pool sessions covering freediving theory, physiology and safety. This foundation prepares you for the water.
  2. Walk – Spring Training: Apply your knowledge in Weeki Wachee’s springs. Instructors focus on relaxation, breath‑ups, equalization, buoyancy, mental techniques & more. The calm environment helps you build confidence without waves or currents.
  3. Run – Ocean Training: Once comfortable in springs, you’ll “Run!” by heading offshore for open water training. Boat sessions in the Gulf or Atlantic introduce currents, swells & marine life while you practice safety and buddy procedures. Completing this course requirements earns your PADI Freediver Certification and prepares you for deeper dives and spearfishing!

Courses Offered in Weeki Wachee

We offer a full range of PADI‑accredited freediving and spearfishing programs. Boat fees apply to ocean training, but a Springs‑Only option lets you complete your certification entirely in freshwater.

Our Experience & Accomplishments

Savage Diving’s instructors—led by founder Ryan Rush—bring decades of experience in freediving, spearfishing and underwater rescue. Ryan also works on Red Bull productions, hold national spearfishing records and compete in international freediving events and spearfishing tournaments worldwide. Certified to teach at the highest levels of PADI instruction. Beyond credentials, we’re deeply involved in Florida’s freediving community: running spearfishing tournaments & freedive events, volunteer for marine conservation projects and mentor new divers. We also run two nonprofit initiatives—Operation Apnea, which teaches veterans to freedive, and Dive Out of Addiction, a freediving‑based program supporting people recovering from addiction. Our small class sizes ensure personalized coaching and plenty of water time.
