LEARN TO FREEDIVE IN ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA

Known for its Spanish colonial history and Atlantic coastline, St. Augustine also offers some of Florida’s most exhilarating freediving and spearfishing adventures. Instead of spring‑fed basins, you’ll explore natural limestone reefs, artificial wrecks and offshore ledges teeming with game fish such as African Pompano, Cobia, American Red Snapper, Cubera Snapper, Mahi‑Mahi, Permit, Wahoo, Grouper, Flounder, Sheepshead and More! Freediving in Weeki Wachee’s springs is like diving in an aquarium, whereas Freediving Offshore St. Augustine feels more like a marine safari—every drop promises a new encounter. At SAVAGE DIVING, we’ve tailored our programs to this rugged environment, guiding students from calm‑water practice to open‑ocean hunts with our signature “Crawl, Walk, Run!” method.
Why St. Augustine Is Unique
St. Augustine’s dive sites offer a blend of natural reefs, artificial structures and untamed Atlantic conditions. Here’s what makes this area stand out:
- Natural limestone reefs & ledges: Offshore outcroppings host a vibrant mix of game fish—including African pompano, cobia, snapper, mahi‑mahi, permit, wahoo, grouper, flounder and sheepshead.
- Artificial wrecks: Purpose‑sunk vessels and reef balls attract schooling fish and provide interesting terrain for intermediate and advanced freedivers.
- Small‑group charters: Most sites are boat‑access only, so we limit class sizes to ensure safety and maximize water time. We grew up here & still have the family dive shop, The Dive Source, where local captains Ryan & Rob Rush know the best reefs and wrecks for training and spearfishing.
- Seasonal variety: We dive here year‑round, but late spring through early fall is prime time for offshore species like mahi‑mahi and wahoo. As the water warms and baitfish arrive, hunting action fires up!
These factors create a more adventurous atmosphere than other Florida dive sites. Training here will build your comfort in waves and currents while still following a structured progression.
Our “Crawl, Walk, Run!” Method
We use the same proven progression that we apply at our other locations, adapting it to local conditions:
- Crawl – eLearning & Classroom/Pool: Start with PADI eLearning modules and in‑person lectures covering freediving physiology, safety and gear. This foundation prepares you to perform breath‑holds and equalization techniques correctly. Start in the pool or shallow spring.
- Walk – Spring Open‑Water Training: Before heading offshore, you’ll practice breath‑ups, finning/kick-cycles, rescue drills & more in a controlled environment. In St. Augustine we use nearby freshwater springs to refine your skills. This calm setting lets you focus on technique without waves or currents.
- Run – Open‑Water Ocean Dives: Once you’re confident in confined water & open water springs, you’ll “run” by diving the reefs and wrecks off St. Augustine. Boat sessions introduce currents and swell while you practice constant‑weight dives, buddy procedures and spearfishing techniques. Completing this phase earns your PADI certification and prepares you for deeper, more challenging dives.
